Neuro-Linguistic-Programming – What Is It?
Neuro-Linguistic Programming sounds quite daunting as a topic. This article searches to explain what exactly it is as well as how it is used in society.
N.L.P. – Neuro Linguistic Programming – What is it?
N.L.P. began as an alternative school of psychotherapy in California, U.S.A., during the mid-seventies. It was invented by John Grinder, a linguistic professor, and Richard Bandler, a mathematician, at the University of California at Santa Cruz (U.C.S.C.). Whilst Neuro Linguistic Programming originated in a therapy form, as time has passed, it has now been firmly embraced by the business community. The concepts and processes used in N.L.P. are now found often in company training programmes. Because it is such a practical skill that focuses on discovering what is actually useful for the individual in learning and production states, it enables the individual and groups of people to achieve their peak performance in many different areas, e.g. coaching, life planning, sports, communication, and management.
N.L.P. – What it isn’t
N.L.P. is not a form of hypnosis or brain washing. Neither is it a form of counselling or psychiatric counselling. Whilst it is a relatively new concept, the idea of learning to do something better by watching someone who has achieved that improvement has been around for as long as a human race has aspired to better themselves, e.g. apprentices, work shadowing, teaching and individual tuition from professionals in business, sport, health and education.
How and Why it Works.
Since around 1980, N.L.P. has transformed itself from a mere alternative tool for psychotherapy to a fully-fledged method of “communicational psychology”, which assists its practitioners in such areas as:
• Personal development.
• Creativity enhancement.
• Increased performance.
• Improved communicational skills.
• Accelerated learning..
• Prosperity manifestation.
• Positive Team Building
Neuro Linguistic Patterning is a useful model of beliefs and techniques that offer a way to use the mind and body to achieve excellence, effective communication, and increased personal development.
It is now being used in such diverse areas as:
• Learning.
• Business.
• Counselling.
• Life coaching.
• Relationships.
• Sports.
• Education.
• Finances.
It is the process of guiding a subject to review current thought patterns, skills, behaviour, and linguistic patterns, and therefore, by discovering personal patterns and removing self-induced limits, new levels of awareness and personal effectiveness can be identified and therefore achieved. As a therapeutic process it works well when used alongside Life Coaching, most forms of counselling, and therapy in general. It is also an incredibly useful skill and knowledge base to have when working in any person-centred career e.g. any form of Holistic Therapy.
The easiest way of explaining N.L.P. is to say that it is a type of applied psychology. To really understand it fully, it needs to be broken down into word components.
Neuro – The definition of neuro relates to neurology, which is the way in which we process information from the five senses that the human being uses from its brain and nervous system. Humans experience the world around them through their five senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste.By the very nature of the vast amount of continuous information flooding our senses, we consciously, and also unconsciously, delete what we feel has no importance to us.
Linguistic – The term ‘linguistic’ refers to the use of languagesystems. ‘Language systems’ does not just mean the words that we use, but all forms of symbolic systems which include gestures, postures, body language etc. that we use in order to organise, decode or attribute some form of meaning to our internal representations of the world, and our ability to communicate at an external and internal level.
Programming – The term ’programming’ in this context is taken from the process of information processing and the concepts of computer science. It draws parallels from the process of computing science in the way that all human experience is stored, coded and transformed, akin to how software runs on a computer system.
Thus by re-installing, deleting or upgrading our mental software, we can change how we think and, consequently, how we act.
Thus by linking up the terms you have the full term ‘Neuro Linguistic Programming’, which is focused on how we form the processes by which we are able to create an internal representation of our experience – of our world (reality) – through language and our neurology.
